Your brake system is comprised of many different components, one of those, which are most important but most often neglected is the brake fluid. Brake fluid is designed to be hygroscopic, that is a fancy term for the description of the property of the fluids’ ability to absorb moisture. It must be this way because of the constant heating and cooling that occurs during the normal operation of the brakes. Because of this heating and cooling causing condensation within the hydraulic system the fluid is exposed to water that the fluid must absorb. If the fluid were not able to absorb this moisture the brake fluid would literally boil in the lines, causing a complete loss of braking.
Once the fluid absorbs a certain level of moisture two problems occur; first the fluids boiling point is lowered as in the above example, causing brake pedal fade. The second problem is that moisture suspended in the fluid causes corrosion. If you have ever had to replace a leaky master cylinder or a leaking wheel cylinder, this was the likely cause. With regular fluid changes these costly and sometimes dangerous circumstances can be cut down or eliminated. Most manufacturers recommend the fluid be changed every couple of years. At Brake Masters, we use a state of the art test system to determine if this service is needed. The color of the fluid is not a reliable indicator of the quality of that fluid.
